Foundation to be established to provide royalty-free open platform and accelerate innovation

The demand for converged mobile devices is accelerating. By 2010 we expect four billion people to have joined the global mobile conversation. For many of these people, their mobile will be their first Internet experience, not just their first camera, music player or phone.

Open software is the basic building block for delivering this future..

With this in mind, industry leaders are coming together to establish Symbian Foundation, to bring to life a shared vision and to create the most proven, open and complete mobile software platform - available for free. To achieve this, the foundation will unify Symbian, S60, UIQ and
MOAP(S) software to create an unparalleled open software platform for converged mobile devices, enabling the whole mobile ecosystem to accelerate innovation.

The foundation is expected to start operating during the first half of 2009. Membership of the foundation will be open to all organizations, for a low annual membership fee of US $1,500.

The Symbian Foundation platform will be available to members under a royalty-free license from this non-profit foundation. The Symbian Foundation will provide, manage and unify the platform for its members. Also, it will commit to moving the platform to open source during the next two years, with the intent to use the Eclipse Public License. This will make the platform code available to all for free, bringing additional innovation to the platform and engaging even a broader community in future developments.

The platform will be free and open to develop on from the start whether you are enthusiast, web designer, professional developer or service provider. To develop on the platform you will not need to be a member of the foundation. The Symbian Foundation’s developer program will provide a single point of access for developer support; providing a wide offering of tools and resources.

There is already a wide ecosystem commitment to Symbian Foundation including:

The MobileMonday Malaysia Summit was held in Kuala Lumpur from May 18-20. The event was well received by both audience and industry, with over two dozen MoMo chapter founders, from around the world, attending. After the founders’ forum on May 18th, an opening gala dinner by the World Congress on IT — WCIT — 2008 was held, for which the MoMo summit was a co-located event. It was attended by the Prime Minister of Malaysia along with a number of other diplomats and CEOs from over 80 countries around the world. One of the most memorable images in terms of branding was a skyscraper fully lit up on one side with the MoMo logo in rotation!

The public event on May 19 was attended by some notable industry players and many university students. The schedule stretched from 9am (10am ‘island-time’ start) to 7pm with over 20 excellent speakers, mostly drawn from the MoMo founder community. Other presentations came from adMob, Ericsson, F-Secure, Google and Universal Music. Topics covered during the panels and keynotes included operator trends, mobile solutions for disaster management, various mobile industry profiles of countries ranging from China to Venezuela, metrics for mobile advertising, success factors for mobile television and platforms for mobile education.

An optional tour to Malacca was also arranged on May 20 with a combination of informal and formal events, public and private forums, global and local interactions with the global MoMo community founders who were present. The MobileMonday movement currently has active chapters in over 60 cities worldwide holding up to 700 local events per year. To accommodate future growth, the MoMo founders are planning governance structures, processes, and event management tools to ensure that the movement scales up in a transparent, dynamic, accountable and productive manner.
